Stroller Decision: The Mac

Our current lightweight stroller, well, okay, really our only besides the freebie umbrella stroller Ms. Kaz keeps in her car, is the Maclaren Quest Mod (the circles design, not the current squares design), and we’ve been pretty happy with it.

It handles very well, especially with one hand. The folds well, although, after a couple years, it doesn’t fold quite as easily with one hand as it used to. The storage is adequate, at best. And the suspension is just okay, compared to, say, a Bugaboo.

We rarely use it. But when we do, we are happy with it.

Maclaren Twin TechnoThis is why the Maclaren Twin Triumph stroller is one of the ones we are considering. And when I say “we”, of course, I mean me. We see a lot of these around our neighborhood. I don’t know if that says more to their worth as a double stroller, or as a bit of a status symbol. Take a quick glance our my window at the rest of the internet, they seem to get good ratings. So maybe it is a little of both.

Of course, there are the standard double-stroller “must haves”, such as independent seat positions, suspension, back hood windows, lightweight. This stroller does claim to be appropriate for newborns, which is a plus.

I think perhaps the biggest surprise, though, was the claim that it fits through standard-sized doors! Of course, I don’t know if this just means more shoving and “she’s on my side!” from the kids.

I can find ’em for around $230. And I don’t have to get to a Buy Buy Baby to check ’em out.

I could also “upgrade” to the Twin Techno and get, amongst other features, adjustable leg rests. But I lose the “fits through a standard door”. And I lost an additional $170 (Twin Technos start around $400).

So… any opinions?

I love the Maclaren single, but a nanny in my music together class says the doubles don’t handle well. Definitely test drive before you buy!
Strangely enough, I had a great experience piloting two Maclaren singles (a volo and a triumph) that were joined by those clip-on stroller connectors. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about: http://doodaddy.net/doodads/stroller-connectors/ ) We only do this occasionally with a friend, though… if we had two kids of our own, we’d certainly get a tandem.

[Kaz: Hey, thanks for the head’s up! I wonder if they don’t handle well relative to the Maclaren singles, or relative to other double strollers?]

I have a front and back graco strider and love it. I can carry it easily, it fits in my trunk and it takes the infant seat straight out of the carseat. But then I like the front and back design best….

Chiming in a little late to this, but I agree that the Mac doubles handle with much more difficulty than the singles. We have a Twin Techno, and it’s a chore to steer and push this thing because of the numerous (12) tiny wheels. In addition, the added weight of two kids makes the bumps and curbs much more difficult to navigate. Combine that with a much higher profilem there’s this ever-present fear of forward tipping whenever the stroller encounters a small bump on and incline. My suggestion is to take it for a good test drive first. Put your daughter in one side, and at least 20 pounds of weight in the other, then push it on sidewalks, up curbs, down slight inclines, over bumps, etc. This’ll at least let you know what to expect. That all being said, I still use ours for our 2 and 3 year old girls, but I’m getting to the point that I prefer if they just get out and walk. Best of luck. I wish there were more good double strollers around.

I suggest you look at the Phil and Ted’s Sport (formerly the E3) with the optional double seat. We started with the Mac Techno XT with our first. When the second one came, we upgraded to the Phil and Ted. It’s the best option out there, albeit a bit heavy. It’s one of the more widely seen strollers in our Capitol Hill DC neighborhood.

  7. My wive and I have recently purchased a MacLaren techno classic stroller and I’ve got to say we’re loving it more and more. MacLaren strollers are a good and sound investment.

    great article btw,

I bought a Maclaren twin stroller when I recently had precious new born twin boys. I decided to go with the Techno over the Triumph but both looked great. I was suprised at how easy it is to get around with. I have seen many people using twin strollers before and they were bulky and wide, but thats not the issue with these ones. I am very happy with the service they provide me and my little boys.

Thanks for stopping by… years later, we are still using this stroller. The tires are getting fairly worn, but it is still holding up well. The only thing I can say about it is that we got spoiled with the tires on the Phil & Ted’s, and the Mac seems fairly bumpy on our old sidewalks. I guess not any more so than other strollers with plastic wheels…
